Colour Grade

I was responsible for the colour correction or ‘grade’ of this film. In the below stills you can see the final result compared with the ungraded footage. The project was shot in a log colour space, but the before image has been converted directly to rec709 without adjustment for a more useful comparison.

The main technical issues that needed resolving included excessive noise due to underexposure, and a general red cast to the image, mostly in the shadows.

Working with the director, I iterated a stylistic approach that we thought matched the slightly oppressive, pseudo-cheerful feel of the characters’ situation, whilst complimenting the 70’s cafe look implemented by the production design.
